Whose Curbside Cuisine Reigns Supreme?

I know the show premiered back on August 20th but I just recently stumbled upon the Food Network‘s “The Great Food Truck Race.” The show is basically a cross between The Amazing Race and Top Chef on wheels, so it was bound to become an instant new favourite of mine. Food trucks have taken the country by storm lately and have elevated the level of street food to delicious and diverse new heights. In New York, there’s even an annual event, the Venty Awards, dedicated to honouring the city’s many street vendors. And now there’s a similar event in D.C…

D.C. Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs has teamed up with the D.C. Department of Arts and Humanities and Brightest Young Things to bring us a DC fusion between the Venty Awards and a stationary version of The Great Food Truck Race TV show. DC’s first Curbside Cook-Off will take place over two days, October 7-8, on the Old Convention Center Parking Lot.

The competition will be limited to twenty curbside vendors and you have until September 22nd nominate your favourite by visiting the DCRA’s website. When you do, remember that the competition is not limited to food trucks. You can nominate any vendor from Zola-On-The-Go to your favourite hot dog guy around the corner of your office building or one of DC’s many food trucks. To kick-off the voting process, Chinatown Coffee Co. and Brightest Young Things are throwing a “Curbside Cook-Off Launch Party” tonight (Wednesday September 15) at Chinatown Coffee Co. on the corner of 5th and H, NW. The happy hour event will go from 6-8pm and feature $3 beer specials and music.

So let the voting begin, may the best street vendor win, and let’s show the DC Council that there is public support for local food trucks and street vendors before they start considering new food vendor rules in October.
