Explore the Wonders of Turkey in the Heart of DC

Two of my very good friends recently came back from their honeymoon in Turkey. I only have vague memories of Turkey, since I visited the country with my parents when I was 11 years old. Listening to their vacation stories and looking through their pictures makes me want to hop on the first United Airlines flight to Istanbul. Unfortunately, a Turkish get-away is not in my near-future and so I will have to settle for the next best thing: the Washington, D.C. Turkish Festival and Turkish Restaurant Week.

On October 3rd, the American-Turkish Association of Washington D.C. presents a day-long, fun-filled and cost-free celebration of Turkey, complete with food, Turkish coffee, a Turkish Bazaar, live Turkish music and engaging folk dance performances. The Turkish Festival will be held on Pennsylvania Avenue between 13th and 14th Streets NW, in front of Freedom Plaza, between 11am and 7pm. In addition to all the usual activities, Murat Aksu will also attempt to build the World’s Longest Shish Kebab to set a Guinnes World Record. Now I don’t know about you, but I would go to the festival just to see a 20 feet long shish kebab!

A big teşekkür ederim to my friend Y. for letting me use one of her honeymoon picture!

Can’t wait until October 3rd to get your Turkish fix? You’re in luck! ATA-DC is also organizing the 2nd Anuual Turkish Cuisine and Restaurant Week from September 17-26, 2010. During that week, you can sample Turkish Food at the area’s best Turkish restaurants for a fixed $25 4-course menu. Participating restaurants include Meze Restaurant and Lounge and its new sibbling Ezme Restaurant and Wine Bar, Morso, Agora, Cafe Divan, The Levante’s and Rosemary’s Thyme Bistro.

Bon appetit or should I say afiyet oslun!!
