Magasinage – Marni mania at H&M

Marni for H&M is the latest high-profile designer collaboration for Swedish retail chain H&M, a tradition that started in November 2004 with Karl Lagerfeld and has since included an eclectic string of labels and creators, like Jimmy Choo, Sonia Rykiel, Lanvin or even Kylie Minogue. In less than 48 hours, average fashionistas on a budget like myself will be able to purchase a few items in Marni’s signature prints and colours, at a fraction of the usual costs. The exclusive collaboration collections are always in high demand, and last year’s collaboration with Versace highlighted the need for H&M to get a little more organized.

The H&M store at Metro Center is gearing up for the Marni collaboration

260 H&M stores worldwide will be carrying Consuelo Castiglioni’s line, beginning March 8th, 2012. The only one carrying the collection in the area is the H&M store at 1025 F Street, N.W. and to make sure that as many customers as possible are able to buy from the Marni for H&M collection, the chain has established a few rules. First, there’s a shopping limit of two pieces per product maximum. So you can’t buy the same dress in 3 different sizes, for example, then resell it for twice the price you bought it on ebay. Then there’s an elaborate system of colour coded queuing… The H&M on F Street will  actually open its door at 8AM for the occasion and divide the first 300 people in line into 10 groups of 30, each wearing a specific bracelet. Those will determine the time that shoppers will be allowed inside the perimeter set aside for the Marni collection within the store. Once you’re finally in, you better not hesitate. You only have 15 minutes to shop so grab these African-inspired tops, statement necklaces and geometrical print skirts and head straight to the register! You can always return the pieces if it turns out that they don’t work out 😉 At 11:30Am, the whole area will be opened to the general public.
