The Nuit Blanche and I were just not meant to be this year 😦 I missed Paris’ Nuit Blanche on October 6 because I was in Washington, D.C. And I won’t be able to go to the district’s Art All Night this Saturday because I’m in Paris. Figures. Of course, both events are not really comparable… Paris’ Nuit Blanche, enjoys the full support of the city of Paris which means it actually spreads all over the city and can last all night. In Washington, Art All Night is produced by the Downtown BID and is concentrated in just one part of town, in eight venues throughout the Shaw-Penn Quarter area. It ends at 3AM too, so “all night” is kind of a misnomer (to be fair, do you really want to be walking around the streets of Shaw past 3AM? Not really…) The event is free but you still need to register for a ticket online. Here’s a map of the different venues that will be offering free curated cultural experiences during the night of saturday October 20 to Sunday October 21, 2012.
Some of the highlights that I do wish I could check out include Caos of F (923 F Street on the map) curated by Jessica Bell, Techworld Plaza’s sound and light installations, especially The Illustrated Art Ride 2012 from The Daily Rider arriving at 9PM with live musical accompaniment and of course eating and being merry with my neighbours at some of my neighbourhood’s favourite spots like the Fire View Lounge at the Renaissance hotel or Zengo. Both establishment are donating some of their proceed to help support the A Taste of Art All Night programming (at Zengo, it’s actually $1 for every margarita sold). Besides, I wish I could actually attend D.C.’s Art All Night event because I would like it to be successful and grow beyond a small neighbourhood event. I’d like to see it be as popular as Paris’ Nuit Blanche, spanning the whole city, with hundreds of venues with original curated art experiences to chose from. And that will never happen until we support the event now that it’s still in its infancy!
